Today Dark Sky announced that they have joined Apple. This is exciting news for Dark Sky, however it has profound implications for Epic Ride Weather. As part of the announcement they have stated their intention to discontinue their API service at the end of 2021. The Dark Sky API is an essential part of Epic Ride Weather, since it provides the precise forecasts that we surface to you in the app.

Epic Ride Weather has been my passion for the past 4 years, so news like this is hard to hear. I will be seeking an alternative to Dark Sky so that Epic Ride Weather can continue beyond the end of 2021. As soon as I have more information I will share it here on this blog.

In the meantime continue to enjoy the app, and if it’s allowable in your area get out there on your bike (responsibly!)

Will Epic Ride Weather Remain Available

Epic Ride Weather will remain available as long as the Dark Sky API is functioning. Currently that means Epic Ride Weather will remain available until the end of 2021.

What About After 2021

I may have to discontinue the Epic Ride Weather service. Luckily I have a year and 9 months to find a viable alternative to Dark Sky. There is a chance that an alternative API will be available, and good enough.

I’ve always strived to offer a premium service in Epic Ride Weather. Part of that is precise, personalized forecasts that are meaningful to you in preparation for your rides. Dark Sky is the only service that I’m aware of that can provide hyper-local to-the-minute precision in weather forecasts. I’m not willing to compromise on forecast quality, so in the absence of a good alternative, Epic Ride Weather will have to shut down.
